Mere moments after I submitted an article ranking the Canucks players most likely to be traded for editing, Rutherford and Allvin rendered that article obsolete. Why? Because they traded JT Miller to the New York Rangers.
The Canucks traded JT Miller, Erik Brannstrom, and Jackson Dorrington to New York (no salary retention).
The Rangers sent Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a top-13 protected first-round pick to Vancouver.
Victor Mancini is a 22-year-old right-shot defenseman who is 6’3″ and has 5 points in 15 NHL games. He seems like the kind of player who fits Tocchet’s system better than Brannstrom ever did.
We hate Twitter/X now; all my homies hate X. So, let’s see how the cool new Bluesky community is reacting to the news!
Oof, I’m sorry, Bert; that is rough. Maybe you can sell it to a Rangers fan? Keep in mind that if you do it tonight, you avoid the tariffs.
Darryl hit the nail on the head here. The Canucks were never going to hit a grand slam with this one; the dirty laundry was far too public. The fact that they got a player, a prospect, and a first-round pick is not bad. Ian’s reply is a good way of looking at this trade. Way to stay positive, Ian!
But not everyone is like Ian.
JJHOLIDAY, that’s $1 in the swear jar.
I get it, though. Miller is arguably the second-best player on the team, behind only Quinn Hughes. It’s not a great return for a player with Miller’s counting stats. It’s almost like they should have traded Miller at the height of his value, and not Bo Horvat. But I already wrote that article years ago.
I’m not all that dialed into the Rangers, but Gibbo here is suggesting Miller will add toughness to the Rangers’ top six. It always feels good to see another fan base say, “I don’t like to see so-and-so go.” So, that’s a plus.
Also, $1 in the swear jar.
Um, excuse me, Jason, but I already made that joke.
Ross is bang on. When Pettersson puts up 4 points tonight against Dallas, it will all be worth it.
Please, Petey, you have your wingers; you are Miller-free. The world is your oyster. Slurp it up.
Wow, people are getting good and fast at this. Well done.
You know, that might be fair. But the Canucks also just dumped $8 million off the books. With a rising cap, it will be interesting to see how the Canucks use this space. Re-sign Lackanen? Re-sign Boeser? Sign Marner? Who’s to say?
Jake, I would feel the exact same way. However, the Rangers are much deeper into their competitive cycle. They are in win-now mode, and that is when a contract like Miller’s is palatable.
Pat, you’re onto something, I bet. That first-round pick seems prime for flipping.
It is, on one hand, a sad day for Canucks fans. There’s no denying he was a fan favourite. At the height of his powers, he was electric. Fans loved chanting his name, even if they were watching wrestling. But on the other hand, we can finally put this locker-room drama to bed.
It’s a fresh chapter. Let’s see how the Canucks play the rest of the year.
See you in the SCF, JT!
